02 — Building

Yes, you build it.

You don’t need to be an aircraft manufacturer to build an airplane. We’ll help you understand what’s involved before you commit.

  1. 01
    Experimental Amateur-Built

In the U.S., the SD-1 is offered for Experimental Amateur-Built projects. You do the building. We help make the process easier to understand.

  2. 02
    Choose how much you build

Spacek offers the SD-1 at multiple levels of completion. U.S. package details are being finalized.

  3. 03
You won’t be on your own

    We’re building U.S.-based support around the SD-1.

04 — Construction

How it’s built.

Wood. Plywood. Carbon. Foam. A mixed-material airframe.
  • 01 — Wood

The fuselage uses a lightweight wood-truss structure.

  • 02 — Plywood

Thin plywood skins form much of the aircraft’s exterior structure.

  • 03 — Carbon

Carbon is used selectively in structural areas, including spar caps and reinforcement.

  • 04 — XPS foam

Lightweight XPS foam is used in parts of the wing and airframe structure.

05 — Configurations

Make it your SD-1.

06 — At the factory

Built, not just assembled.

Inside the Spacek factory: wood, plywood, foam and composite, cut and glued and bagged and sanded by people at benches. That is how these airplanes are made, and a kit is the same work handed over partway through.

  • Sheets of pink and yellow XPS foam stacked on a rack at the Spacek factory

    XPS foam

    Rib stock, cut to shape.

  • A worker trimming a sheet of aircraft plywood with a small rotary cutter

    Plywood

    Trimmed and fitted by hand.

  • Hands fitting a spruce stringer along the inside of a plywood structure

    Wood

    Stringers glued into the structure.

  • Gloved hands laying a strip of glass cloth onto a curved composite part

    Composite

Glass and carbon, laid up wet.

07 — Engine

08 — U.S. support

Built by you. Supported here.

SD Planes USA is the U.S. distributor for Spacek SD aircraft and engines.

  1. 01
    U.S.-based support

We’re building U.S.-based support around the SD-1 — from sales and parts to technical guidance and builder assistance as the program develops.

  2. 02
We’re going to build one ourselves.

We plan to build an SD-1 in-house so the support we develop is based on firsthand experience with the airplane and the construction process.
