Built light. On purpose.
Weight is the number every other number depends on. A lighter airplane needs less power to fly, and less fuel to keep flying.
That's the idea behind the SD-1: keep the airframe light, and a small engine is enough. With the SE33I XP, that engine produces 35 hp.
It carries one pilot, a 9.2 US gal tank and a small baggage compartment behind the removable seatback. An airplane for flying on your own.
530lbMTOW
Maximum takeoff weight — pilot, fuel and baggage included.

Wood. Carbon. Foam. All there for a reason.
A mixed-material airframe. The factory POH describes it like this:
- 01Fuselage
A wood-truss structure covered in thin plywood, with a composite cabin hood and a side-opening canopy.
- 02Wing
A composite main spar with carbon spar caps, XPS foam ribs and a 0.039 in (1 mm) plywood skin.
- 03Tail
An all-moving horizontal tail with an anti-servo tab, built around a composite spar with foam ribs and plywood skin.
- 04Removable wings
Each wing attaches with two main and two auxiliary pins, so the wing panels can be removed.
Construction details from the factory POH. Current factory drawings take precedence.

Three ways to put it on the ground.

- TDConventional Tailwheel
- The factory’s lightest, lowest-drag option. Fiberglass main legs and a tailwheel on a composite spring.
- TGTricycle Gear with Castoring Nose Wheel
- A castoring nose wheel. On the ground you steer with differential braking and rudder.
- TGCTricycle Gear with Controllable Nose Wheel
- A nose wheel steered directly from the pedals, with spring suspension. More complex and heavier than the castoring version.
All three can be fitted with wheel pants.
Small airplane. Not one-size-fits-all.
- 01Standard Cockpit
Suits pilots up to about 6.1 ft (1.85 m).
- 02XL Headroom
Higher canopy top and turtle deck — up to 2 in (5 cm) more headroom.
- 03XL Legroom
Longer fuselage for taller pilots — 2 in (5 cm) more legroom, intended to help fit pilots up to about 6.6 ft (2 m).
- 04XL Cockpit Width
Wider cockpit for added comfort and shoulder room — about 2 in (5 cm) more at the arms and legs, with a widened instrument-panel area.
Actual fit is individual and should be checked in person.
How much airplane do you want to build?
The range runs from plans with a basic kit of factory-made parts through progressively more complete airframe kits. The plans alone aren't enough: the basic kit's parts aren't described for builder fabrication.

Building in the U.S.
In the U.S., the SD-1 is offered for Experimental Amateur-Built projects. You do the building. We help make the process easier to understand.
The FAA's National Kit Evaluation Team evaluated the SD-1 TGC kit configuration for the amateur-built major-portion requirement. That evaluation is not an FAA approval or certification, and it applies to the TGC kit it defined.
U.S.-based support
We're building U.S.-based support around the SD-1 — from sales and parts to technical guidance and builder assistance as the program develops.
We're going to build one ourselves. We plan to build an SD-1 in-house so the support we develop is based on firsthand experience with the airplane and the construction process.
